This recent Thanksgiving week will perhaps go down in the books and memories as the best hunting weather in 2007. A pleasant north wind came in along with its two best friends. Clouds and light rain. To most people this type of weather is depressing and ordinary, but to a hunter in the brush country it is great. It makes me giddy like a fourth grader the night before Christmas. It is the perfect scenario for finding a big ol’ dark, heavy horned buck with a fuming nose and edgy eyes peering over the glistening cactus…seen for the first and only five seconds of the season.
My dad and I got a lot of work done this week. It was nice to be able to hustle a little bit and not have a heat stroke. We had a group of hunters come in on Thursday for a doe hunt and it was in the 50s. The day before on Wednesday, the temperature was 95. Since then it has continued to get cooler and cooler staying in the 40s and 50s. With this cooler weather, we feel better and the wildlife feels better. It was nice to see all of the activity on the ranch while riding around and getting things done.
On a management hunt this past week we had a young man come down and take a really awesome buck. The deer is a basic 8 point with 12 inch back tines with a big fork along with another kicker. The bucks beams wrapped way around and almost touched in the middle. Needless to say the sixteen year old hunter was very excited and so was I as his hunting guide. This management buck was one of those bucks that rarely showed him self. When this deer walked out I think I had buck fever and was shaking more than the hunter. The buck was chocolate horned and really did have a lot of great character. It will be a hunt I will always remember.
The bucks are already harassing the does and trying to declare their territories and girlfriends. The rut is about another week from really starting but I am already beginning to see big mature bucks that I haven’t seen. For a hunter this is a magical time of the season. Thanksgiving unites family and friends and Christmas is just around the corner. The holidays bring us happiness, good meals and time with your nearest and dearest. Holidays also bring cold fronts, big bucks in rut and good campfires at the deer lease. The Interstates will be loaded with
